The Wages Paid To The Culture Of Violence

For more than 36 years, America has denied that aborting a child prior to birth is the moral equivalent of murder; in fact many have glorified abortion as a human right and charged those who know otherwise with disrespectful, dishonest allegations such as fanaticism, terrorism and anti-feminism. Media Madness: Men and Abortion

The planet is a strange place these days where hyped political rhetoric continues to grow ever more bizarre. Take, for example, the recent comments by Adam Reilly in his article, “The Blessing of Abortion.”
The man has a penchant for using emotionally charged words to misinform his readers regarding basic differences between those who support aborting children versus those who abhor it. For example, he focused on the pro-abortion zealot Katherine Hancock Ragsdale about whom I commented awhile ago.
She is the woman, you may recall, who defined abortion as a “blessing.” Read more »

Common Killing Contradicts Common Law

From a historical perspective, the Anglo-American common law tradition has punished or otherwise disapproved of both suicide and assisting suicide for over 700 years. Over time, the “punishment” aspect of the law went away because it became clear that suicidal individuals needed therapeutic treatment for their disorder rather than severe legal punishment. However, that did not translate into permitting assisted suicide under law until recently. Read more »

Common Ground Quicksand In Obamaland

The US News headline “Obama woos Catholics with nuanced abortion talk” sounded an alarm that I could not ignore or resist commenting about. After all, how many ways can this president insert his clever rhetoric into the Catholic arena before someone reveals the guile behind the smile?
It seems, at least according to US News, that Obama used his speech at Notre Dame to prove to the world that his allegiance to outright advocacy of abortion on demand was perhaps not as solid as one first might suspect. Read more »

Caritas Christi’s Deal With The Devil – II

The events in the Archdiocese of Boston that brought about the unbelievably bad news regarding the “joint venture” between Caritas Christi Health Care System and the Centene Corporation of St. Louis, Missouri, continue to unfold at a fast and furious pace. In view of public reports that Massachusetts regulators had approved a joint venture between the two entities in early March 2009, public expressions of alarm grew. Concerned Catholics could not help but say that this union would result in Caritas Christi being complicit in some way with providing or referring for surgical abortion, medical abortion, contraceptives or sterilization procedures – each of which are considered unacceptable according to Catholic teaching and Catholic healthcare ethics. Malignant Language

Disrespect, bias and twisted zealotry grow in a garden sown with seeds of deceit. Such language maligns, but never counters, intellectual honesty. The Kisslings and Brays of our world are sad figures, not only because they have resorted to tactics like those noted here, but because they are human beings who are loved by God and who have somehow lost their way. Supreme Speculation

Over the past few months, since President Obama took over the reins of power, I have seen a mixed bag of responses from allegedly pro-life Americans. Some argue that we should not criticize the man but understand that he honestly wants to find common ground between those who favor killing and those who oppose it. Notre Dame: Catholicism’s Crucible

President Obama has played his cards publicly and with assertiveness when it comes to the Catholic Church. He has chosen pro-abortion Catholic politicians to hold a variety of responsible positions in his administration. These actions could have provided Catholic bishops with an opportunity to speak out in a unified voice and make it clear that pro-abortion public figures who claim to be Catholic are not in fact Catholics in good standing. Some Thoughts About Motherhood

On May 10, mothers from one end of this nation to the other will be honored by their children, and many will honor their own mothers as well. Personally, I had the most remarkable mother that any human being could ever hope to have. My mom, Bertha, was a solidly faithful, courageous and loving woman who gave her all to her daughters and to her son. My brother was with us for such a brief period of time, but each day was so special for all of us. Read more »

Viral Denial vs Swine Flu

Over the past few days, there has been what seems to me to be a growing alarm among members of the media, and therefore the public at large, regarding a flu, which was first described as “swine flu,” and then out of deference to the hard-hit pork industry, relabeled the H1-N1 flu virus. I guess many people were thinking that they had better not eat pork products since “swine” were causing the flu, which is actually not the case. The Centers for Disease Control has said that the flu virus is not food borne, and therefore eating pork is not a problem. All the backtracking reminded me, once again, that we are after all, dealing with a media-created mass hysteria. Read more »

Clearly the Obama administration has drawn a line in the sand when it comes to Americans who wish to focus attention on the plight of the preborn, calling abortion by its proper name, and demanding equal rights and equal protection for all, regardless of age, health, place of residence or condition of dependency. Planned Parenthood’s #1 Enemy

In 1985, when an IBM executive by the name of James W. Sedlak started Stop Planned Parenthood, I really do not think he had any idea that his realization of a need and the subsequent implementation of his idea would result in such a phenomenal success. And yet that is exactly what has happened in the intervening 24 years.

Posterity’s Plague

Star Parker has been a favorite of mine for years; in fact, she spoke at one of American Life League’s events in Florida ten years ago and wowed the audience with her insights. She has just had that effect on me again. Her commentary on the valiant Walter Hoye, an African American pastor who was sentenced to 30 days in jail for standing outside an inner city abortion mill holding a sign that said “Jesus Loves You and Your Baby, Let us Help You,” hit the nail on the head. Obama Chronicles: Acrid Atmosphere

While it really isn’t surprising that President Obama would be working his way toward some sort of politically motivated abortion program, it is quite interesting that he has chosen to use his new White House Office on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships as the vehicle. The irony of this relationship, however, might escape some people. I cannot see how a relationship can actually exist between people’s supposed belief in God, their apparent willingness to overlook what abortion does to children and negotiating ways to supposedly reduce the death count rather than eliminate it.
