Happy Fourth of July

A good day to remember why we yet can celebrate it

1

Tranquility or Terrorism

baby-hands2The establishment media has made a career out of doing all it can to downplay the effectiveness of pro-life activity, and as the video points out, it has done so at the expense of truth and civility. For example, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow used her June 5 television program to report on American Life League’s Protest the Pill Day as an example of how pro-life Americans abuse language because we tell the truth about how the birth control pill works. Catholic Detractors Cannot Derail The Truth

catholic-truthMany foolish statements have been made over the past several days. What is curious is that the statements are being made by or about Catholics who have an obvious affection for misrepresentations, deceptions and assorted flagrant flirtations with all things consistently offensive to Christ and His Church. The Wages Paid To The Culture Of Violence

culture-of-violenceFor more than 36 years, America has denied that aborting a child prior to birth is the moral equivalent of murder; in fact many have glorified abortion as a human right and charged those who know otherwise with disrespectful, dishonest allegations such as fanaticism, terrorism and anti-feminism. But the results of this disconnect between the price one has to pay for stealing a duck egg and the price one has to pay for killing a preborn child are all around us. Read more »

Media Madness: Men and Abortion

men-and-abortion2The planet is a strange place these days where hyped political rhetoric continues to grow ever more bizarre. Take, for example, the recent comments by Adam Reilly in his article, “The Blessing of Abortion.”
The man has a penchant for using emotionally charged words to misinform his readers regarding basic differences between those who support aborting children versus those who abhor it. For example, he focused on the pro-abortion zealot Katherine Hancock Ragsdale about whom I commented awhile ago.
She is the woman, you may recall, who defined abortion as a “blessing.” Read more »

Common Killing Contradicts Common Law

assisted-suicideFrom a historical perspective, the Anglo-American common law tradition has punished or otherwise disapproved of both suicide and assisting suicide for over 700 years. Over time, the “punishment” aspect of the law went away because it became clear that suicidal individuals needed therapeutic treatment for their disorder rather than severe legal punishment. However, that did not translate into permitting assisted suicide under law until recently. Read more »

Common Ground Quicksand In Obamaland

obama-abortionThe US News headline “Obama woos Catholics with nuanced abortion talk” sounded an alarm that I could not ignore or resist commenting about. After all, how many ways can this president insert his clever rhetoric into the Catholic arena before someone reveals the guile behind the smile?
It seems, at least according to US News, that Obama used his speech at Notre Dame to prove to the world that his allegiance to outright advocacy of abortion on demand was perhaps not as solid as one first might suspect. Read more »

Caritas Christi’s Deal With The Devil – II

deal-with-the-devilThe events in the Archdiocese of Boston that brought about the unbelievably bad news regarding the “joint venture” between Caritas Christi Health Care System and the Centene Corporation of St. Louis, Missouri, continue to unfold at a fast and furious pace. In view of public reports that Massachusetts regulators had approved a joint venture between the two entities in early March 2009, public expressions of alarm grew. Concerned Catholics could not help but say that this union would result in Caritas Christi being complicit in some way with providing or referring for surgical abortion, medical abortion, contraceptives or sterilization procedures – each of which are considered unacceptable according to Catholic teaching and Catholic healthcare ethics. Malignant Language

malignant-languageDisrespect, bias and twisted zealotry grow in a garden sown with seeds of deceit. Such language maligns, but never counters, intellectual honesty. The Kisslings and Brays of our world are sad figures, not only because they have resorted to tactics like those noted here, but because they are human beings who are loved by God and who have somehow lost their way. Let us pray for them and for those who accept what they say without questioning it. Read more »

Supreme Speculation

supreme-courtOver the past few months, since President Obama took over the reins of power, I have seen a mixed bag of responses from allegedly pro-life Americans. Some argue that we should not criticize the man but understand that he honestly wants to find common ground between those who favor killing and those who oppose it. Others point to his record, and carefully document the reasons why he never met an abortion he did not like. Read more »

Notre Dame: Catholicism’s Crucible

notredamePresident Obama has played his cards publicly and with assertiveness when it comes to the Catholic Church. He has chosen pro-abortion Catholic politicians to hold a variety of responsible positions in his administration. These actions could have provided Catholic bishops with an opportunity to speak out in a unified voice and make it clear that pro-abortion public figures who claim to be Catholic are not in fact Catholics in good standing. The bishops passed the Obama test. Read more »

Some Thoughts About Motherhood

mothers-dayOn May 10, mothers from one end of this nation to the other will be honored by their children, and many will honor their own mothers as well. Personally, I had the most remarkable mother that any human being could ever hope to have. My mom, Bertha, was a solidly faithful, courageous and loving woman who gave her all to her daughters and to her son. My brother was with us for such a brief period of time, but each day was so special for all of us. Read more »

Viral Denial vs Swine Flu

swinefluOver the past few days, there has been what seems to me to be a growing alarm among members of the media, and therefore the public at large, regarding a flu, which was first described as “swine flu,” and then out of deference to the hard-hit pork industry, relabeled the H1-N1 flu virus. I guess many people were thinking that they had better not eat pork products since “swine” were causing the flu, which is actually not the case. The Centers for Disease Control has said that the flu virus is not food borne, and therefore eating pork is not a problem. All the backtracking reminded me, once again, that we are after all, dealing with a media-created mass hysteria. Read more »

Pragmatists Against Human Personhood

personhood-nowPersonhood: the legal recognition of a human being’s full status as a human person that applies to all human beings, irrespective of age, health, function, physical or mental dependency, or method of reproduction, from the beginning of their biological development.
American Life League is engaged in the ongoing development of what we now call human personhood apologetics.* When we see arguments against proposals that address human personhood, we examine them in order to discern how to effectively convince people who oppose our efforts that they are not addressing the subject – the preborn child – in the proper way. Here are a few such arguments, followed by our response to each: Read more »

Contrary Catholics Continue To Confuse

cloning-humanThere seems to be no end to the mind-boggling contradictions that spew forth from the mouths of public figures who claim to be Catholic, but use their media opportunities to discredit the Catholic Church and her teachings through deception.
First, there was Kansas Republican Senator Sam Brownback’s statement, made after voting in favor of pro-abortion Catholic Kathleen Sebelius for secretary of the federal Department of Health and Human Services, as reported by the Washington Times: Read more »

Napolitano Nastiness

janet-napolitano-obamiconClearly the Obama administration has drawn a line in the sand when it comes to Americans who wish to focus attention on the plight of the preborn, calling abortion by its proper name, and demanding equal rights and equal protection for all, regardless of age, health, place of residence or condition of dependency. Perhaps you are among the extremists this document is discussing; to my mind this sort of extremist is an American expressing his freedom of speech in an effort to bring an end to the heinous crime of direct abortion which is, after all, an act of murder. Planned Parenthood’s #1 Enemy

stop-planned-parenthood2In 1985, when an IBM executive by the name of James W. Sedlak started Stop Planned Parenthood, I really do not think he had any idea that his realization of a need and the subsequent implementation of his idea would result in such a phenomenal success. And yet that is exactly what has happened in the intervening 24 years.
What began as a part-time volunteer effort has today grown into not only the most effective anti-Planned Parenthood activity in the nation, but also the most effective pro-baby, pro-parenthood, pro-Christ effort that I have ever seen. Read more »

The Pluripotency Pickle: The Story Of A Lie

stem_cells_diagramAnd today, the quagmire that surrounded the false science of the National Institutes of Health has taken on an entirely new and more horrific meaning for those of us who care about truth.
In November 2007, Professor Shinya Yamanaka announced that he had discovered a way to reprogram a skin cell in such a way that those involved in human embryonic stem cell research would no longer have to face the ethical landmines surrounding the destruction of human embryos. Read more »

Bizarre Bilge From The Culture Of Death

cult-of-deathBizarre bilge is news and comments that would be unthinkable in a truly civil society. Once you read the following collection of “news” items you will get a sense of what I mean by relegating anything associated with the deceptions perpetrated by the culture of death as bizarre bilge. North Dakota Bishops Nullify Personhood

personhood-nowIn these times of “accountability”, isn’t it time that the American bishops be held accountable for the scandalous anti-life policies that too many of them have been forming and advancing for the last 40 years? No one can get straight answers from them. They should be required to give complete explicit rational reasons for their positions and policies and be ready to fully defend them — like the rest of us are. Read more »

Contemptible Distortions and Delusions

cardinal-f-georgeThe Catholic Church and her miraculous history of withstanding assaults from within and without is always a source of inspiration for me. Starting with Judas Iscariot himself, there have always been insiders who mouthed platitudes or behaved in certain ways while plotting against the very essence of what it means to be Catholic. Posterity’s Plague

baby-smileStar Parker has been a favorite of mine for years; in fact, she spoke at one of American Life League’s events in Florida ten years ago and wowed the audience with her insights. She has just had that effect on me again. Her commentary on the valiant Walter Hoye, an African American pastor who was sentenced to 30 days in jail for standing outside an inner city abortion mill holding a sign that said “Jesus Loves You and Your Baby, Let us Help You,” hit the nail on the head. The Media, The Pope And The Condom

pope_benedictus_xvi-2My goodness, how those anti-Catholic writers do rant when a kernel of truth is shared with a suffering people, which is exactly what the pope was doing in his comments. Contrary to what those in media la-la land want to tell us, the planet is not overpopulated, condoms do not prevent the spread of AIDS and the Creator of the planet does not need an editorial board to assist him in carrying out His master plan for mankind. Note Dame Sober Up

obama-abortionIn attempting to put a proper face on the ugly situation developing on the campus of Notre Dame University, home of the recent announcement that President Barack Obama would give the commencement address and receive an honorary degree, I fell upon an incredibly wise insight just uttered by Archbishop Charles Chaput. Speaking at the Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit, the archbishop said, … Read more »

Conspiracy to commit compassion

euthanasiaThough not widely publicized, the case of 35-year-old Air Force Captain Michael Fontana brings to light the tentacle of the culture of death that is snake-like and sneaky. That tentacle is euthanasia, which has come to be known in recent times by a myriad of names, none of which is designed to expose the horror of what it actually means. Read more »

Splitting Hairs So We Can Kill ‘Em and use’ Em

obama-stemcellobama-stemcellLike everyone else who first saw the CNS headline, “Obama Signs Law Banning Federal Embryo Research Two Days After Signing Executive Order to OK It,” I was very confused. We had people at American Life League scrambling in an effort to understand precisely what was actually going on regarding human embryonic children and their susceptibility to murder. And after a great deal of reading, reviewing and re-reading the matter began to clarify for us. Read more »

Holocaust Then and Now

holocost-then-nowWe have frequently argued that one of the main reasons why we want to redefine the “pro-life” movement as the pro-human personhood movement is that it is a positive, upbeat way for us – in this age of iPhones, MySpace, Face Book, Twitter and Blackberries – to bring the humanity of the child, from his first instant of existence, right into your telephone, so to speak. We realize that there are literally millions of young people who have either never thought about the fact that a child dies during an abortion, or have grown up accepting as fact that abortion is part of health care. Obama Chronicles VII: Quality Standards In Child Killing

stemcellThe news about the Obama administration’s action on human embryonic stem cell research was not surprising, but a bit otherworldly. Imagine a president of the United States who claims that by taking action to permit the murder of preborn human embryonic children, he is actually protecting science from politics! Oh yes, indeed. Obama Chronicles IV: Rebelious Sebelius

sebeliusKathleen Sebelius, current governor of Kansas and alleged Catholic, has distinguished herself in many ways. Most disturbing among them is her long-held support for the act of abortion. It is this single attribute that perhaps makes her attractive to President Obama, as he sets his sights on her as his nominee for the post of secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services. Obama Chronicles V: Contrary to Conscience

conscienceIt has been a very interesting few days. Analyzing the latest presidential escapades is not always as straightforward as one might wish, but one thing has become perfectly clear to me. There is no way that a sound-thinking, upright Christian member of the medical community is going to be able to survive under the Obama onslaught unless at some level, lawmakers or judges see through the dictatorial attitudes of a president who appears to have no respect for anyone’s perspective other than his own. Peculiar Penchants

personhood-nowIt is perpetually true that when a genuine threat to the status quo becomes more than an idea in someone’s imagination, those who are most threatened by innovation become overcome with anxiety from which flows a whole lot of garbage. Such is the case with the growing popularity of personhood not only within the pro-life movement but within the political structure of various state legislatures as well. Read more »

Father Kuchinsky: What Can I Say

friar-machadoWould you like me to say that God is unaware and unconcerned that a president would sign an executive order so that, with the stroke of a pen, taxpayer money now will be used to kill babies in the womb; and your money and mine is now to be used to promote the evil of abortion throughout the world? Do you want me to tell you that the Word of God does not say the shedding of innocent blood cries out to Heaven for vengeance? It does. I cannot change that. I cannot withhold His warning. Sanctimonious Swilling

no-planned-parenthoodWhat these anti-baby fanatics are really saying is that spending taxpayer dollars on helping the expectant mother through her nine month pregnancy and then helping her with the costs involved in giving birth is simply not worthy of taxpayer support, but recommending contraception and abortion is! If that isn’t a twisted way of focusing on how these vultures think they can save America money, I don’t know what is! Read more »

Democracy and Demagogues

Death By Induction

baby-handsRecently a friend advised me that St. Joseph’s Catholic Hospital in London, Ontario, Canada, was providing something called “early induction of labor” for expectant mothers based on physician claims, such as the one voiced 24 years ago, that if the preborn child was not delivered early, the mother would die. Absolute vs. Acrobats – Catholic Style

pope_benedictus_xviWhen your head is swimming from all the commentary ebbing and flowing from yesterday’s Pelosi encounter with the Holy Father, the essence of what actually occurred is lost. The fundamental question of our day, what is truth, evaporates in headlines and public pronouncements. One is left asking, is that all there is?
Was this just another media circus? Are the acrobats still swinging? Read more »

Pelosi will meet her nemisis

pelosi-bishopsHouse Speaker Nancy Pelosi is about to pull off, at least according to some, a real coup by being given the opportunity to have a photo op and a conversation with the Vicar of Christ on Earth, Pope Benedict XVI. According to one news report, Pelosi, who describes herself as an “ardent” Catholic while advocating reproductive rights, will be the highest-ranking U.S. official to see the pope since President Barack Obama took office last month. baby-in-wombUnder the guise of “access to primary care,” the Regents of the University of California have been conducting an experiment on women in Concord, Los Angeles and San Diego… The purpose of this experiment? “Demonstrate the role of advanced practice clinicians in expanding early pregnancy care.” That’s Orwellian for “training non-physicians to perform first trimester abortions.” Read more »

Pro-Life Sea Changes Bring Hope

squezzIt is always healthy for the pro-life effort when new ideas spring up and generate discussion about better ways to save babies, educate Americans and otherwise move forward. Obama Chronicles: Acrid Atmosphere

obama_roarWhile it really isn’t surprising that President Obama would be working his way toward some sort of politically motivated abortion program, it is quite interesting that he has chosen to use his new White House Office on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships as the vehicle. The irony of this relationship, however, might escape some people. I cannot see how a relationship can actually exist between people’s supposed belief in God, their apparent willingness to overlook what abortion does to children and negotiating ways to supposedly reduce the death count rather than eliminate it. I must be missing something. Read more »

Catholic is not an adjective, its a way of life

catholic-christianityA series of events over the past few days have brought to light, once again, how difficult it is for some people who call themselves Catholic to practice the faith they claim as their own. At the same time, these events have confirmed the strength and courage required of those who not only wish to be identified as Catholic, but are also willing to step out in faith, go against the tide and actually make a difference for the Lord in this otherwise abysmal world of ours. Incompatible Ideologies

skull-crossbonesIt is becoming increasingly clear to me that I’m out of step with the rest of the world. And boy, am I glad! It’s not just me, either.
