Brown Destroys One Party State

| January 20, 2010 | 0 Comments

Scott Brown and the independent voters of Massachusetts delivered a devastating blow to the Democrat parties strangle hold on the state, defeating machine candidate Martha Coakley 52% to 47% and seizing the Senatorial seat vacated by the death of Ted Kennedy.  The immediate effect was that the Democrats have lost their filibuster proof supermajority (60%) in the Senate.   The last time Massachusetts sent a Republican to represent them in the US Senate was 1972.  This astonishing repudiation of the Democrats national agenda and in particular their ramrodding of health care down our throats has Democrats and their media allies literally freaking out.  During his victory speech last night Brown proclaimed, “When there is trouble in Massachusetts there is trouble everywhere and they know it.”

Despite a flurry of last minute negative advertisements, an emergency stumping trip by Obama over the weekend, and threats by one liberal commentator that he would “cheat to keep these bastards out” by voting ten or twenty times,  Brown was pushed by a Tea party type surge over the top to a decisive victory.   This despite being behind Coakley by double digits in the polls just one month ago.  Brown who is also a Lieutenant Colonel and thirty year veteran of the Massachusetts National Guard ignored a lot of personal nastiness by the desperate liberals and stated, “We ran a clean issues oriented upbeat campaign.”   In particular he promised to stop the Democrats health care plan and free the Democrats feudal grip on the so called “Kennedy seat” and return it to the people of Massachusetts.

Democrats whose seats are in contest during the midterm elections this year have all felt the shadow of possible if not probable defeat pass over them.  Reacting to his fellow Democrats threats to drag out the paperwork and procedural steps required to certify and seat Senator elect Brown,  Senator Jim Webb (D)Virginia  served notice to his party not to rush forward recklessly in an attempt to pass health care before Brown is seated.  Senator Webb issued the following statement last night:

“In many ways the campaign in Massachusetts became a referendum not only on health care reform but also on the openness and integrity of our government process. It is vital that we restore the respect of the American people in our system of government and in our leaders. To that end, I believe it would only be fair and prudent that we suspend further votes on health care legislation until Senator-elect Brown is seated.”

Brown’s victory will make it harder for the Democrats to enact their agenda unchallenged but we still have many battles that must be fought and won.   It is still possible for them to pass some version of their health care plan either by using a procedure called reconciliation that only requires 51 votes.   They could also attempt to go forward by having the House pass the Senate’s version of the health care plan.  Yet pushing the current health care plan forward against the clear and vocal resistance of the American people and in particular the discontent of  independent voters who were instrumental in Obama’s election is playing with a fire that could burn the Democratic house down for a generation.

Over the weekend the ever aloof Obama tried to ridicule Brown for driving a pickup truck around the state while campaigning.   During his victory speech Brown addressed Obama crowing, “Would you like me to drive the truck down to Washington so you can see it?”   Unlike many of our legislative “overlords” Brown does not come from a privileged background and his GM pickup truck isn’t a campaign gimmick, it is his very own 201,000 mile veteran ride.  Last night Brown proclaimed of health care reform, “We can do better” to which the crowd spontaneously replied “Yes we can”.   Now it is the Democrats and their socialist supporters time to choke on change.
