Notes from the Underground: 9/12 in DC
My brother and his wife traveled at their own expense to Washington DC to participate in the 9/12 protests. I talked to him several times while he was at the protest and since his return home and would like to share some impressions:
1) Conservative Individualist Rebels: Unlike so many liberal protest where bus loads of Union thugs and ghetto layabouts are bused in, paid a stipend to be there and march around with pre-printed signs the great majority of those at the 9/12 protests were working class tax paying citizens who hand made their own signs and were there to represent themselves in protest against BOTH Democrats and Republican statist who are attempting to make wage slaves of our productive classes in thrall to an ever growing and overbearing government and its protected and preferred classes of people. My brother said the CVS across the street from his hotel quickly ran out of poster board and markers. People were spread out on sidewalks on the day of the march knocking out last minute signs to wave. These people with a few exceptions (the Glen Beck 9/12ers being a prominent group) weren’t professionally organized and bused to the event, they were drawn there by their own personal convictions and great concerns for the future of our country.
2) Not So Silent Majority: The Tea Party movement has its roots in the great Silent Majority of this nation. The crowd was almost eerily quiet and well behaved. These are not people who have protested much of anything during their entire lives and they don’t (yet) really know how to do it. My brother noted how carefully people in the crowd disposed of garbage and mentioned that one black groundskeeper was praising the crowd for making his job easy. Compare this to the heaps of garbage left behind after the inauguration and you see an indicator of what culture war means in even small details. What does it take to make a person who is so careful and respectful of good order and correct behavior that they are loath to throw an empty water bottle on the ground travel thousands of miles at their own expense of time and money to protest? What does it mean to alienate these people and force them into rebellion?
If he has wit to realize it President Obama is in the same situation that President Johnson realized he was in when CBS evening news anchorman Walter Cronkite announced that he believed the war in Vietnam was a lost cause. President Johnson is reputed to have said, “If I’ve lost Cronkite, I’ve lost Middle America.” A few weeks later Johnson announced that he would not seek re-election.
However, this is not 1968 and white Middle Class America is not the key to elections that it once was so don’t expect to see Obama fade away. With the battle lines drawn clearly now his next move will be to lock in the permanent Democratic Party majority by pushing through an amnesty plan that will bring tens of millions of new non-white Hispanic voters into our system. Combined with continued government hand outs to labor unions, blacks and the radical left they are clearly close to cementing this new majority in place regardless of what the rest of us think.
3) Mostly White but not just for whites: Although the crowd was heavily white it is not just a white movement. There would be more black middle class and Christians in these crowds but many are too compromised by being ensnared in government jobs and affirmative action positions in the private sector. The black middle class in America is torn between the natural interest of their generally conservative middle class socio-economic level and their racial loyalty. Unfortunately the left has been able to define black authenticity by the standards of the ghetto and black interests as rooted in the extortion racket of “victimization”. Thus the Marxist stranglehold on the blacks vision of themselves as a people has retarded the development of a true color blind society. The majority of the white Tea Party protesters don’t want to go backwards to some neo-segregation, most just want to go forward to the color blind meritocracy that we were promised.
4) Former European Socialist Don’t Want Socialism Here: My brother noted a number of groups of protesters from the formerly communist areas of Eastern Europe. One group with a prominent banner (see photos I posted earlier) were Russian Jewish immigrants to the US who have lived under socialism and do not want to wind up ensnared again. We would do well to listen carefully to these former socialist thralls and take their warnings that we are on the path to soul crushing communist tyranny in this country. We should seek out these recent Eastern European immigrants as they are our natural allies in this culture war.
5) Wake Up Republicans: Republicans need to stop being so smug, most of these protesters are disgusted by the statist big government policies and corruption of both national parties. Read the signs, many of these people want to see ALL the incumbents voted out of office and term limits put in place to break up the criminal conspiracy of politicians for life like Ted Kennedy and the special interest groups. We all know who really writes most of these gargantuan bills and who they are designed to benefit and we know it is not for “the common good”. Despite the best efforts of the federal government’s Department of Education some of us can still read.
6) Vomiting Up Leftist Indoctrination: The Left is right about one thing, the Tea Party protests are not just about taxes or health care. Those issues are vital and immediate but what we are seeing is Middle America in revolt against a toxic socialist culture that is being forced down our throats. This isn’t over yet it is just beginning. We are just starting to vomit up forty years of leftist indoctrination.
7) The Great Silencing: My brother was furious when he got back to see that the MSM has attempted to degrade and minimize the 9/12 protest that were held not just in Washington DC but across the nation. He told me that he had a good time and felt like he had gotten his point across during the protest and purged some of the things that were bothering him out of his system but that when he got home and found out that the MSM had completely failed to cover the event and what coverage there was misrepresented what happened he was furious. Now he has promised to redouble his efforts at protesting and is looking for his next opportunity. Once again the liberal elites in the MSM are attempting to hide the truth of what is really going on in this country. They will fail, truth always outs.
8 ) Obama Fled Washington: Everyone noticed President Obama’s helicopter leaving the White House as he fled Washington DC for the comfort of his little 12-15,000 person pro-government health care rally and fawning echo chamber in Minnesota. Nobody in the Tea Party 9/12 crowd was violent or had any ill intentions toward Obama, they just wanted to be heard. Obama clearly has written these people off and in so doing has greatly narrowed his margin for re-election. Had he had the respect for the hundreds of thousands of people who showed up (the 70,000 person estimates are ridiculously low but truth will out) in his front yard to address them he might have been able to hold on to some of them in the next election. Funny to see the professional politicians in both parties so completely misunderstand a real grass roots revolution in the making. Guess what, they are not all registered Republicans. My guess is that Obama has created a new version of the Reagan Democrats this summer.
9) Racists? You Wish It Was that Simple: The left wants to drop back into their comfort zone by labeling the 9/12 protesters as racist because that excuses them from actually listening to the legitimate grievances of the protesters. The protesters in DC are good decent hard working people not rabid KKK racists. The black people in the crowded streets were safer amidst all these so called racists whites than many of them would be in their own neighborhoods. They were certainly safer than a lone white person would be on a Baltimore bus or any of the public spaces in many of our once great cities. I would welcome a real discussion on who really violent racist are in America and we could start it by a discussion of why 14% of our population is committing over 50% of the murders. The liberal elite, who have a stranglehold over our countries institutions, have nothing but contempt for middle and working class Americans whom they have long despised as “fly over” people whose thoughts, grievances and concerns do not matter. This summer they are finding out that we do matter and that there will be political consequences for their contempt.
