The 2009 Screwtape Letters , Washington, D.C.: Letter From Uncle Billtape to Young Nephew Wormwood
Uncle Billtape is very pleased at how well you have deceived the Americans. You are so close to stealing so much from them, but you must practice patience my young apprentice. To successfully steal the American soul, you must not make yourself so obvious. It’s good other demons like Soroszeebub have taken over your doom and gloom. Quite clever really. Uncle Billtape is quite proud. Was it your idea or his idea for Soroszeebub to take over the Great Depression talk while you calm Americans fears by denying your support for their free speech and the Fairness Doctrine and sending Robert Gibbs out to lie for you young Wormword and claim it’s not your intention to nationalize Citigroup. Deception is the key to robbing the American soul, so hit them when they don’t see it coming young Wormwood.
My dear nephew, I give you an A for your first month’s effort, but so much more can be done. Remember, my little buttercup failed in 1993 to shorten the lives of Americans through our sinister nationalized health care plan. Our master would love nothing better than to shorten the life of these miserable mortals and give them less of a chance to find faith, hope, and love through reducing the quality of their health care. Learn from buttercup’s mistakes, deceive them and hide it in complicated legislation; perhaps a stimulus II to increase the sloth in America. The path to hell is legislation my dear nephew. You have done well creating a new generation of slothful Americans in such a short time.
Your affectionate uncle
Billtape
If you are unfamiliar with C.S. Lewis’ (The Chronicles of Narnia) The Screwtape Letters, Uncle Screwtape is a demon observing and writing letters instructing his young demon nephew ways to insure damnation of a young man’s soul. It’s a look at the Christian life in the eyes of the devil. It’s quite brilliant, and I thought I would have a little fun with it at the expense of Bill Clinton and Barack Obama; after all, the soul of America is facing another great test. Does America have the character she once had to prevail, or have we become so dependent on the government that we are willing to sacrifice freedom to provide them with more power? That’s the question we need to ask in 2009, and I hope if its the latter, we work harder to protect the freedoms our country offers us.
