So 20% Kids Today Suffer From Mental Disorders: My Instructions to Fix This
A recent report from the Associated Press’ Lindsey Tanner cites that one out of five children suffer from personality disorders. I can’t let this slide. Why have adolescent personality disorders reached such a high number? I will approach this with common sense and much controversy.
Every time I turn on the TV, there are ads for about any drug you can imagine. We have become the take a pill society, which has encouraged all kinds of new medications to hit the market, and a few of these medications are evil.
If I were a parent, I would never place my kid on a mind altering drug no matter what the teacher said. There is an epidemic of over diagnosing kids with hyperactivity and putting them on Ritalin, Concerta, or whatever drug controls the minds of these kids. The pharmaceutical companies, doctors, teachers, and parents are robbing children of their own personality. If a kid in the classroom has a little too much energy, shows leadership, or questions the system, they quickly force the parents to get the kid to the doctor, who then write the script.
I think back to friends of mine that were hyperactive, and I think about how it would have destroyed their uniqueness. It saddens me. I am glad I didn’t grow up in the Ritalin generation. My lifelong friendships may have taken a different path. These are good people, good conservative people. Recently, I had a conversation with my best friend from school, and we both agreed he would have been treated much differently in the world today.
I can go much further than that. Our society has lost its moral compass. Since the liberal successfully removed God from our schools, drug use is up, teen sex and pregnancy is up, and violence is schools are up. Liberals will try to argue there is no correlation between the two, but the further this country moves from solid religious principles the further our kids fall.
Let’s look at TV. TV keeps pushing the limits of what is acceptable, and parents set their kids in front of the televisions for hours. TV gives many children more hours of parenting than parents do.
Hey, I understand it’s tough. Parents are forced to work two jobs these days, and the government wants to help in the wrong ways. A solution to this would be to kill the federal income tax and other taxes that rob parents from spending time with their kids. Instead the government wants to take a ‘it takes a village attitude.’ This is failing our nation’s kids, but I can’t blame it all on the government though.
Even though we have an unfair tax system, parents still find enough money to buy their kids violent video games like Grand Theft Auto, which includes prostitution, carjacking, and vulgar language. Here’s a novel idea for families: sit down and read the Bible, the Constitution, or the Declaration of Independence one night. Kids are growing up ignorant of the core values of this country. Did you know the Bible covers almost every life situation that a young person might face, and it has answers for them?
Parents also need to start overseeing their public school systems. For crying out loud, your five-year-old shouldn’t know what a transvestite is, but there are teachers out there who are teaching this stuff to elementary kids. I assure you some of this confusion our kids face today comes from this indoctrination and forcing these beliefs on these kids.
Food choices are important in making sure your kids are both physically and mentally healthy. Our foods have so many chemicals. These chemicals affect the chemistry of their bodies. Healthy food choices are vital for emotions and well being. Look at the containers of food. Look at all the chemicals on the label. They don’t even put sugar in junk food any more. They substitute it with high fructose corn syrup–whatever that is! Artificial sweeteners like Nutra Sweet cause neurological changes in the body. Personality disorders would drop drastically if you force your kids to get healthy with food and exercise.
Exercise is also essential in defeating personality disorders. Get them high on moving, not high on blowing something up on a video game. The fresh air and a raised heart rate will do wonders for the a growing kid.
Give your children real heroes to look up to. Kids today look up to the wrong people. People like Britney Spears have their own mental problems. Why would you want your kids looking up to her? Share with the the stories of true greatness. Maybe it’s a grandparent who served in World War II, maybe or a historical American hero like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, or perhaps, my own American hero, Ronald Reagan. If you teach your kids to look up to miserable people like Britney Spears, they are going to be miserable. If you teach them to look up to people who did something real with their lives, they will be inspired to do something great with their own lives.
Finally, make your kids appreciate what they have. Shows like Hannah Montana preach consumerism to these kids. More, more, more. It was bad when I was a kid, but kids have cable TV these days. They aren’t ever pulled away from it. It’s there 24/7. When I was a kid, and Jimmy Carter came on to ramble, my night was over. (By the way, that changed when Reagan was President. I cared what he said, and I took pride in my country.) Shows like Hanna Montana are clever marketing devices that turn your kids into credit using consumers. Kids are never taught to be happy with what they are given. Parents are increasing their debt load to provide temporary happiness to their children.
Parents, I get it. I know it’s hard raising a kid today when they have so much pulling at them at any given time during the day. Kids today don’t have to add to these research studies. Give them what they need: love, God, attention, education (not the public school kind), work ethic, and a sense of pride in who they are (so they can deal with all the other messed up kids that are descendants of the flower child generation). Parents you have to stop being you. You can’t be selfish after you have kids. You have to grow up and make tough decisions–not as a buddy to your kids–but as a parent to your kids.
